Emergency Telephone Calls
In case of fire, sudden illness and serious injury, dial 119. When you dial 119, you will be connected with the Disaster Emergency Information Center. You will be asked the following questions in Japanese, so please answer the questions calmly and accurately.

If you are a victim of a crime, theft or traffic accident, and need the police immediately, dial 110.
Your call will be connected with the Communications Command Center of the Police Department, and answered with, “Hai, Hyakuto-ban Keishicho desu.” (This is 110, the Police Department Emergency Center.)
You will then be asked the following questions, so please answer the questions calmly and accurately.
- What happened, when and where?
- Is the offender (or other party) there, or has he/she left or fled?
- Is anyone injured?
- What is your name and address?
The procedures for making an emergency call differ by the type of telephone you are calling from.
< From a Public Telephone >
• Public Telephones with an Emergency Call Button (Green, Yellow or Blue Telephones)
Lift the receiver, press the emergency call button and then dial 110 or 119.
• Digital Public Telephones (Gray Telephones)
Lift the receiver and dial 110 or 119.
< From a Regular Home Telephone >
Dial 110 or 119 without an area code.
< From a Cellular Phone >
• Tell the emergency desk that you are calling from a cellular phone.
• Do not make the call while in transit.
• Since the police or fire department may call you back to confirm the call, do not turn off your phone for about 10 minutes after making the call.
