Garbage and Recycling
How to Dispose of Garbage
Shinagawa City provides a door-to-door waste collection service. Please put waste out in front of your house by 8:00 a.m. on the designated collection day. (In apartment and condominium complexes, place waste in the designated area.)
| Combustible Waste (Collected Twice a Week): |
Garbage that can be burned, such as kitchen scraps, paper scraps, dirty plastic containers/wrapping ( ), other types of plastic items, and rubber and leather items, fall in this category. Please place items in a transparent or semitransparent bag so that the contents can be seen, even if you use a trash can with a lid.
* Drain kitchen scraps completely of liquid, remove any solid excretory product from disposable diapers, and wrap the garbage in paper before disposal.
* Please dispose of clean plastic containers/wrapping ( ) as recyclable resources. |
| Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Items (Collected Once a Week): |
Garbage that is not suitable for burning, such as ceramic, glass, and metal items, fall in this category. Please place items in a transparent or semitransparent bag so that the contents can be seen.
* Be sure to use gas cylinders, spray cans and lighters completely before disposal and place them in a separate bag from other garbage.
* Because glass and sharp-edged tools may cause injuries, wrap them in paper and write Kiken (danger) on the outside.

How to Dispose of Recyclable Resources
Recyclable Items (Collected Once a Week): Newspapers, flyers, magazines, books, cardboard, paper boxes, paper cartons, cans (for food and beverages), bottles (for food and beverages), PET bottles (for beverages, sake, mirin, and soy sauce), dry-cell batteries, clean plastic containers/wrapping ( ), and unbroken fluorescent lights fall in this category. Bundle and tie newspapers, magazines, books, cardboard, paper cartons, and paper boxes according to type. Lightly rinse bottles, cans, and PET bottles and remove the cap, if any. Place items according to type in a transparent bag or in designated containers.
* Please dispose of dirty plastic containers/wrapping ( ) and such plastic items as stationery and sundries as combustible garbage.
Please dispose of dry-cell batteries (D, C, AA, AAA, N, and rectangular 9-volt cells) in a transparent bag. Dispose of broken fluorescent lights together with ceramic, glass, and metal items.
* Please take recyclable items to the recyclable resource collection station no later than 8:00 a.m. on the appropriate collection day.
* PET bottles are collected at some shops. Remove the caps, rinse the bottles lightly, and crush them before placing them in the collection box.
Large-sized Waste (On an Appointment Basis)
Garbage that measures approximately 30 cm or more, such as furniture and bicycles, is considered large-sized waste. You can either ask the collection staff to come pick up your garbage or take it directly to the designated site on a Sunday. In either case, please call the Shinagawa Large-sized Waste Reception Center (Tel: 5715-1122) and have your garbage ready on the designated day. A handling fee is charged according to the item collected. Please purchase yuryo sodai gomi shori-ken (prepaid large-sized waste processing ticket) at places that sell these or at the Waste Collection Office and attach it to the large-sized waste before disposal.
Air Conditioners, TVs, Refrigerators, and Washing Machines
Air conditioners, TVs (CRT, LCD, and plasma), refrigerators (including freezers), washing machines, and clothes dryers can no longer be disposed of as large-sized waste. Please ask the shop where you are buying a replacement model or the shop of original purchase to take your used appliance. If you are not sure of the shop of original purchase or live a distance from it, please call the Electric Appliance Recycling Reception Center (Tel: 5296-7200). You must pay a collection/transportation fee and a separate recycling fee.
Personal Computers
The city does not collect personal computers (including monitors). Please ask the manufacturer of your computer to collect your used item. If you are unable to determine the manufacturer, please inquire with the PC3R Promotion Center (Tel: 5282-7685).
Recyclable Resources
The City of Shinagawa also collects items at other places besides the recyclable resources collection station using designated collection sites, central collection programs eco box collection (collection boxes) and group collection programs.

Please wash and dry used food trays. Only trays that can be broken easily by hand are acceptable. |

Items that have been washed; futons, carpets, uniforms, and clothes that are severely soiled with dirt or oil are not collected. |
| Used Cooking Oil: |
Vegetable oil and lard only. Please DO NOT mix with other items. Gasoline and kerosene are not accepted. |

Food trays (White) and paper cartons.
Group Collection (at the decided time and place of each group):
Newspapers, magazines, cardboard, used clothes and fabrics, bottles, cans and paper cartons, etc.
